It’s party time for GLBT community

The Island’s gay community is encouraged to step out of the “corners and closets” and band together for Bermuda’s first advertised gay party on Monday night.

Organised by gay rights activist Valentino Tear, it’s hoped Pink Disco Monday will provide a fun and safe environment for the local gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender community.

Musician Shine Hayward will perform at the event at Red Steakhouse & Bar; Mr. Tear will DJ.

Gays to be covered in new human rights bill

FRIDAY, NOV. 2: Government will address sexual discrimination with a new bill that will offer protection for a range of characteristics including sexual orientation and age.

Governor George Fergusson made that announcement in this morning Speech from the Throne calling the current Act “outdated” for a 21st century democracy.

In the 2012 Throne Speech Government said it would look at “the feasibility of introducing an Equality Act to address the outstanding areas of discrimination, in particular, discrimination related to sexual orientation.”

Videos: Rainbow Alliance Hosts Open Forum

[Updated with videos] The Rainbow Alliance of Bermuda will be hosting an open forum for discussion and support at Queen Elizabeth Park today [Aug 17] from 12pm to 2pm.

A spokesperson explained that the Rainbow Alliance of Bermuda is a collective of people supportive of the rights and struggles of the LGBT [lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender] and queer community of Bermuda.

The open forum will give people an opportunity to express themselves and their stories through whichever form they choose, including spoken word and music, the organisation said.

Island’s ‘in dire need of a gay and lesbian centre’

Professional drag queen Mark Anderson this week gave homophobic Bermudians a dressing down for being intolerant and hypocritical about gays.

He told the Bermuda Sun that Bermuda is in dire need of a gay and lesbian centre where homosexuals could go for counselling and sex education.

He said the need is greatest for teenagers who are struggling with their identity — but often have nowhere to turn.
